Dear Nancy,
Thank you for your comment. Sadly, you are correct that we need more
research on this subject.
Although this issue does not present ground breaking new research for
readers, what it does do is add much food for thought. I read it cover
to cover as soon as I got it and have been pondering the various
questions ever since.
As you can see from the panel, there are many opinions out there on
tongue tie. Until we have more research, "expert opinion" is consider a
valuable resource. I don't think this issue was meant to convince
doctors to change their minds about tongue tie. I believe it was meant
for USLCA members, who are primarily IBCLCs, trying to do there best for
breastfeeding mothers and babies, and they need more information.
I acknowledge that I am prejudice having helped start this journal for
USLCA back in the day and being an Associate Editor for Clinical
Lactation. What we are trying to do is provide our members with
information that will help them in their day to day clinical work.
I also feel that the point made in the editorial that we need to be
respectful to our colleagues was also important. I have been shocked
what professionals have said about other professionals about tongue tie.
Acting professionally is part of being a professional. : )
Warmly,

Barbara Robertson, MA, IBCLC, RLC
