I think Dr. Newmann has said that ectopic breast tissue will involute if
not drained.

The key is to get the mom through the initial period without an abcess.
I have them ice the area immediately (don't wait for it to swell) and to
avoid any direct stim. to the area (such as hot water from the shower
etc...)

I then prepare them for the possobility of mastitis which, if caught
early and treated with antibiotics, shouldn't progress to abcess. By the
time the ten days of abx is over, in my experience, the abberant tissue
has generally involuted to a point where it is no longer a problem.

This is really no different than treating someone who has had breast
surgery and has some ducts from which the milk cannot be
drained.....those ducts WILL stop producing, it just takes a little
time.

Mom who nursed for 11 1/2 years with abberant breast tissue under one
arm....never a problem.
