I just finished reading "Five Women" by Rona Jaffe....the plot.....One of the
five, Billie,
a single woman longing for a child chooses a male donor because of his GOOD
genes...err...jeans. When the baby is born she breastfeeds and everything
goes
just fine....until kindergarten when the teacher leads an afternoon
discussion on what
the children had for a snack when they returned home from school and Little
Billie
replied that he usually had titty milk with his oreos. The teacher calls the
mother and
says " I understand you're still breastfeeding him. That can be very
destructive behavior, you know, for a child who is trying to socialize with
more mature children
his age. Wouldn't you like me to set up an appointment for the two of you
with the school psychologist?"
Billie and her son had already talked about the incident and had decided that
they
would discontinue this part of their relationship. He was very upset when
all the other
children laughed and called him a baby.
I found it rather unusual that extended breastfeeding was even mentioned in a
novel,
and I have mixed emotions on how it was portrayed. Comments?????
