Hi Everyone,

worked with an infant that received infant jar meats for every meal and
ordered by the PCP. When I was consulted, the infant was in kidney
failure. After my recommendations to decrease protein source, the
levels immediately dropped. Infant was also found to have silent
aspiration which was the REASON feeding at the breast and bottle were
inadequate. At that point the mother was no longer interested in
relactating and it took about one week to reestablish bottlefeeding
after the spoon feeding was his primary source of nutrition for a few
months. I have found US Recommended Dietary Allowances for infants from
1.5 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of weight per day. This infant
was receiving 7 to 8 grams of pro per kilo per day - one jar of 2oz 7
times a day. Certainly very unusual practices and certainly not
appropriate.
