I work for the state of Nevada WIC program. I teach bfing classes in
several WIC clinics around the Las Vegas area. On Tuesday, the nutritionist
from one of the clinics said that a RN from a local NICU called asking about
whether human milk fortifier was offered by the WIC program. She didn't
know, but asked the State Nutrition Coordinator and all she said was, "if
the infant's dr. gives the mom a prescription for it."
This led her to ask me about what it is and why an infant would need it.
I told her what it was. However, she informed me that the RN told her that
they tell the moms to use fortifier after they take them home for even up to
a year! This surprised me!

I would like to confirm the appropriate use of fortifier and She would like
more information on fortifier for herself and to pass on to this RN.

btw, I often have clients with babies at this hospital that get told such
things as, "We use fortifier because your milk isn't good enough for your
baby".
I have also learned that many RNs don't tell the moms that there are pumps
there for them to use or how much bm to put in a container when taking it to
the NICU. Moms will often "fill" them up by putting in 4 oz or more and the
RNs just throw the extra milk away after opening it. They never tell the
moms. I find out by the moms calling me and saying they can't seem to pump
enough, only to find that they are pumping enough for a few babies, but the
RNs tell them that some how the milk ran out before the end of the day.
