I think there was something like the nipples you describe in one of the GOLD 2010 presentations, I am quite sure it was Bridget Ingles's "Nasty nipples and bothersome breasts". It was said such nipples are very prone to infections because the creases in the rims stay moist - and the recommendations were to rinse the nipples after bf and make very sure they are dry in the creases to prevent further damage and more infections. I hope I remember this correctly, it was a really great presentation.
