This discussion reminds me of the time I was doing my rounds and walked into
a room as a mother was nursing her baby. From where I was standing I could
see a nice round cheek and good jaw movement, but as we talked it started to
look funny to me. I asked her if she could feel a strong tugging on her
breast and she gave me a big smile and said, "No!" Upon closer
examination, I saw that the baby's chin was tucked nicely into his mother's
breast, but he was sucking on his own tongue and he didn't have any breast
in his mouth at all! I'm sure she was thinking how great things were going
because it was so comfortable. It took several days and visits to our
office after discharge before the baby latched on correctly and
consistently, but she certainly felt the strong tug when he finally did it!
