Hi June,

You may want to consider phoning this Paed and asking for his rationale for the advice he gave.  It may be that he is happy to be corrected if it was a guess (which I am picking).  This may be important if you think this type of advice is likely to be given again to any of your clients.  

 You are a kiwi right?  In which case, this mum is still under her midwife for postnatal care so I would have a conversation with the midwife to help get this mum back on track and stop the unnecessary supplementation.  It is unlikely this baby will need to see the paediatrician again so there is a good chance of rescuing this situation. (In NZ, paediatricians  only see  problems, after referral from a primary practitioner -  they do not see well babies).

Conflicting advice remains one of the biggest undermining aspects of breastfeeding support.  BFHI is going some way to addressing this issue, but until BFCI is underway, there will be continued frustrations!
