Permission to post from a co-worker:

XX’s daughter in law had a baby last Friday. Her previous pregnancy ( 18 months ago ) was complicated by postpartum preeclampsia and some cardiac symptoms. She was on anti hypertensive drugs and ultimately recovered fully. She had no recurrence of high blood pressure during this pregnancy. She is not breastfeeding because her doctor advised that a “breastfeeding hormone” could contribute to congestive heart failure. I can find nothing in the literature to support this claim. And maybe she misunderstood the doctor. But have you ever heard of anything like this?

I echo my co-worker's confusion. All the sources I looked at failed to mention any such concern. My inclination would have been to ask the doctor to "share the resources this recommendation was based on so I can better understand" but this is not *my* d-i-l and this is a second marriage for my co-worker so I'm not sure how forceful she can be with offering alternatives.

Have any of you faced this issue in your practices?

Thank you in advance,

Cindy Garrison BS IBCLC
