Karen's so-called soapbox on "compliance" was fantastic and I
will treasure her remarks. A dermatologist friend somewhat
depressed me by criticizing my supporting a mom's decision to
stop bf. I felt SO much better after reading Karen's note.
"Patient compliance" seems to me very judgmental - the
implication that "if you aren't with me, you're against me" sets
up a needless confrontation situation where inevitably there is
a winner and a loser. So unnecessary. Altho it hurts, we wins
some and we loses some. If I can maintain a warm, caring
relationship with the client AND keep my cool (altho I feel she's
making a mistake), I tell myself "maybe next time...". I also
liked Karen's description of fine-tuning explanations to each
client. Onwards and upwards! Judy Knopf
