I think you will find what you are looking for in Dr. James McKenna's 
work.  http://www.nd.edu/~jmckenn1/lab/index.html  He and his 
colleagues have done sleep-lab studies with mothers and babies 
sleeping together and apart.

Helen Ball is another co-sleep researcher.  I don't have links handy, 
but try http://scholar.google.com to search for her academic work.
