Despite the absence of any lumps or breast soreness prior to the sudden
onset of mastitis in this mother, I wonder if she had a headache as an
early warning of infection? For some mothers this can be an early-waning
sign to alert them.

It's interesting that the mastitis has hit, in a similar way and at similar
stages, in each of this mother's lactations. I think you are probably right
in suggesting that the common factor, since it is age-related, could be a
change in feeding pattern, with longer gaps between feeds, perhaps at
night. Has she experienced any other changes when her babies are this age,
such as resuming employment or taking a new medications? Lecithin continues
to be mentioned as part of the management for mastitis in the Lawrence &
Lawrence text, and so it seems a suggestion that is worth trying. I'm not
so sure about the other oral preparations.

Just my 2 cents' worth,

Virginia
