I have had several moms that are prescribed the "mini pill" that have had a sharp decrease in their milk supply. One went from producing 6 oz per pumping at 6 weeks post partum down to 2 oz within two days and she was nursing / pumping every 2 hours each day. I advised her to stop taking it (if her doctor agreed) to see how fast her supply came back up. I told her to continue to feed/pump every 2 hours as per usual. Do nothing else different. Her supply came up to 4 oz per pumping the next next day, and up to the 6 oz per pumping session in two days! The dose she was taking was .35mg of Norethindrone. I looked it up in Hale's book and it does say that at lower doses the decrease was not as significant as at the higher doses. (pp662-663 Hale 2006 12th Edition) Mom did decide on her own to discontinue the pill and use other methods for now.

There is an OB/GYN at the hospital where I visit clients that has the Depo shot ready for them as part of their discharge process! It has prevented so many from producing a supply that I encounter. How can I talk to this Doctor about what he is doing. I know he is more concerned about mom getting pregnant again right away. Have a blessed day, Merideth Buell, CLC, BE, BFPCDept.
