THere is a big difference in gifts from the community to welcome a new baby
or help protect a family (smoke alarms, bracllets) and "gifts" croom formula
companies which undermine breastfeeding and the health of infants who have
no voice with which to make a choice. I wish that more communities would
give out "gifts" such as smoke detectors, baby resource books, even things
that are frivolous such as heirloom quality baby braclets or blankets.
These things do not interfere with breastfeeding and infant health. One of
the things that gets handed out at some of the local hospitals here is a
"Pump List". It includes the names and numbers of local pump rental
stations and LC's, CLE's etc. It is a great resource for a mom. If she is
having problems with BF, she can look at the list, find someone in her area
(the list is done up with the area that the LC/CLE is in) and get help. I,
personally, am on this list as a rental station and CLE and receive phone
calls almost every week from new moms who just need a bit of info, or
sometimes more.

WHo received NO gifts from the hosp with either of her hosp births, and
received the cutest hats from her midwives with her last birth at home.
