We are not providing coconut oil. However we tell moms to use it and it's readily available at any grocery store. We buy some for use in the outpatient setting ourselves (using our own credit cards). It is not on the pharmacy list that hospitals can purchase for their pharmacies that I know of, therefore not available in hospitals. Olive oil is available listed as sweet oil. We use that for moms who are pumping.

Subject: Coconut Oil

I am trying to update our policies and protocols for inpatient and outpatient Lactation Services at our hospital. I would like to add something about the use of coconut oil for treatment of sore nipples/yeast. Are any Lactation Consultats suggesting or providing coconut oil to their patients in the hospital setting or outpatient setting?

If so do you have evidence based information that you can share? Thaks
