Winnie's thoughtful post with good suggestions for Fio really made me
remember something I don't often think about any more.
I didn't have any pre-set notion of how long I would breastfeed my first
child. In our immediate circle of acquaintances were several mothers who
had breastfed for over three years, and that certainly influenced me, as did
my knowledge of breastfeeding from the great class I had on maternal-child
nutrition at U of Washington.
But I was very aware of one thing, and that was, using neutral, non-slang
words about breastfeeding at all times. My daughter learned to call what
she drank 'milk' (how revolutionary). I knew I didn't want her sitting in
the cart in the checkout line at my local supermarket, yelling 'I want a
boobie!'
No one raises their eyebrows when a three year old asks for milk.
Rachel Myr
whose first child has never asked for milk since she was weaned, in 1984!
