I've just caught up on Barbara's extrememly edifying anecdote, posted a
couple of days ago, about the crabby baby who turned out to have a hydrocele
in the testicle and got much cheerfuller when treated, no surprise there.

I sometimes share with parents a similar anecdote about my middle daughter
(now four), who never slept soundly at night. Over the years I tried various
strategies to encourage her to do so, including an extremely brief flirtation
with Ferberizing when she was perhaps a year and a half -- a non-starter.
I thought I had tried everything, and when none of them worked I gradually
acclimated myself to the idea that she would be hopping into and out of my
bed and her own several times a night, and that was just how she was. But
it turned out that I hadn't tried one thing: Pepcid (ranitidine). When she
was eventually treated for GERD (on other, daytime symptoms), her
night-waking was cut in half. Some nights she now actually sleeps through in
her own bed, mirabile dictu.

Another story to remind us that distress isn't a character flaw.
