Bethany, I was one of those who earlier pushed the marathon
nursing-and-drop-the-solids, and I guess I still kind of feel I'd go that
way. Nurse often enough and the baby is unlikely to "starve" for more than a
day -- how frequently did he really get the the breast over that weekend? My
understanding from technical descriptions others have posted on lactnet over
the years is that frequent, rather than long, nursing is the key here. On
the other hand I know it is true that some ovulating moms do report a really
recalcitrant drop in supply, so I don't want to be too unrelenting.

But you didn't mention in your follow up whether the mother is still working
on rice cereal, which of course would also be associated with decreased
supply, every day along with the nursing and the formula. Maybe if the
nursathon results have not been satisfactory another answer is to change from
the lo-cal and lo-nutrition rice cereal to some also low allergy but higher
nutrition food. Jack Newman often reminds us that babies can start with meat
if they need the iron or calories. One of my babies' lost weight on solids
until I got to avocado, which also turns out to be nearly always tolerated I
believe.

More nutritious solids might help decrease the need for those
pain-in-the-neck formula top-ups, and that in turn might send the baby back
to the breast for comfort sucking instead of finishing his feeds with that
cozy bottle, yum yum...
