Ellen asks about what BC method would be recommended for a nursing
mom. While we know that exclusive breastfeeding offers a fair
degree of protection, many moms want something more concrete with
less factors that can lead to "failure". I know we have to be
careful not to let this topic wander off into controversy that isn't
breastfeeding related, but sometimes moms do press us for opinions
on this.)
Here is my personal opinion. It is my understanding that condom and
foam used together give a reliability almost identical to that of
the pill. While current "pills" don't have as high levels of
hormones as they did when they first came out, there may still be
some concern. One thing I like about the condom/foam combination
(man uses condom, woman uses contraceptive vaginal foam) is that it
is a shared responsibility. If a woman conceives on the pill, there
is always the question "Did you forget to take it?" With the
combination, and no method except abstinance is 100% reliable, if
there is a "failure" there is no way to know which part didn't work
(and subsequently who is "to blame").

Winnie
