This is not a plea for help, nor a question, just a reflection that each
baby is different as is each breastfeeding experience...and that even
someone w/ lots of lactation knowledge can readily be humbled!

I am a 40 yo IBCLC and gave birth to our 8th baby on 27 Jan - home
waterbirth. I thought latch was great, and baby was thriving with mec
passed within 24 hours of birth, transitional stools on day 2, no nipple
pain, no jaundice whatsoever (baby had two chiropractic adjustments due to
a precipitous birth, nuchal cord X2 and brow presentation.)

Red flags in hindsight: infrequent stooling, no audible swallowing;
increased fussiness at and away from breast; constant feeds

At 13 days of life, baby weighed and no gain X 4 days.
At 14 days of life, weight 9 pounds even.

Immediately started:
*working to correct a shallow-narrow gape-nipple feeding latch and poor milk
transfer-- Wiessinger-Glover latch/positioning helpful:

*pumping after all daytime feeds
*fenugreek + blessed thistle 4 caps of each four times daily
*SNS with expressed human milk for all daytime feeds w/ 1/2 -2 ounces EBM
supplement per feed
*Mother's Milk tea 4 cups/day
*alfalfa/oatstraw/nettle/red raspberry leaf infusion
*breast compressions
*increased skin-to-skin
*IBCLC home visit 2/12, repeat visit 2/14

At 14 days of life, weight 9 pounds even.
At 15 days of life, twelve hours since last weighing, weigh 9 pounds 5.5
ounces, an increase of 5.5 pounds

Still using SNS for feeds, and doing all of the above. Staying close to
home and baby.
Baby voiding v. well but remains an infrequent stooler.

It has been a journey in stress and humility and a struggle with a sense of
my body betraying me...but now I am focusing on NON blaming, and just doing
ALL I CAN to get baby back to breast alone and get my supply back.
Thanks for "listening."
