In the hospital it's common for women to begin breastfeeding in the operating room after c-section while still numb from spinal or epidural. Transfers poorly into milk. The med during general transfer poorly too and are quickly metabolized. As was mentioned by previous post, she can breastfeed after general as soon as she feels alert enough to do so. Though typically most hospitals won't allow children in the recovery room. So probably after recovery room. So whichever is more convenient to her. Sometimes you can get an anesthesiologist who has not kept current with research and says pump and dump for 24 hours. If so ask which med they are worried about, ask them to look up on lact med or have her call you.
