Subject: Re: Advise Down's BF

Down's babies benefit greatly from breastfeeding. They have poor immune
function as a result of their Down syndrome and breastfeeding really helps
avoid constant ear infections, etc. Unfortunately, they often have
initially poor oral motor function and coordination. Having the mom
preserve her milk supply by pumping/expressing and using a bottle, syringe,
or other device to give the milk to the baby will be necessary until the
baby learns to feed adequately and gain weight well at the breast.

Down syndrome kids need good followup care. The AAP (American Academy of
Pediatrics) has a practice parameter on followup of Down's patients. This
includes screening for thyroid disease and celiac disease. Even if no
murmur is heard in the nursery, a cardiac ultrasound evaluation is
recommended to ensure that there is really no cardiac defect.

These kids do well with good care. Here in the US, they are enrolled in
developmental stimulation programs and go to school at the normal times.
Often they do fine in regular kindergarten classes, but need special
academic classes for upper grades. As adults, most are able to find
productive work and are able to live in and participate in the community in
group homes and supervised living environments.
