So every baby is expected to be asleep at that time? In our case it's not the
nurses who do it. All it takes is to know where to place the electrodes and how
to turn on the machine. The machine does the rest and prints out a "pass / no
pass" report. It sounds like the company rep or someone they trained is doing
the test at your place. If this is something new or if the hospital is still
evaluating different testing equipment, than I can understand that to some
extent and hopefully would change once the testing program is well in place.

"the babies here are returned to the nsy for vital signs checks and
physicalassessment. why not do this in the mother's room and save much time and
footsteps since the babies then have to be returned to the mom's room
afterwards. this is the $64 question, but the answer is this is the way we do
it."

Do they still have separate nurses caring for the moms and the babies? It's the
only way this would make any sense and it's really an antiquated system by now!
Actually the nurses are missing a golden opportunity for some teaching. When
taking the temp, they can be teaching mom how to do so. When she has baby
unwrapped to check the heart and breathing rate, she can point out any normal
skin variations, discuss the baby's state, show how to check for jaundice and so
many other things. Teaching this way makes much more sense and I think sinks in
more than sitting down and formally going over the information!!!
