My understanding is different from what you describe below. The CDC has recently (2000) revised the growth charts based on data from several major surveys, including NHANES II and NHANES III, which took place a lot more recently than the 1970's. The 'old' infant growth charts (0-2 years) were (as far as I've been told) based on the FELS data, which was a sample of exclusively formula fed caucasian children. The new charts are based on data from different ethnic groups as well as a mix of breast and formula fed infants. This may still not be ideal for plotting exclusively breastfed children, but I would expect it to be better than what we had previously. The Ross Growth Charts = the CDC Growth Charts = NCHS Growth Charts = the WHO Growth Charts.
The CDC recently fine-tuned their growth charts, but the basic data is the same. Some of the data came from the Fels Research Institute study of children 0-2 years in Ohio many years ago. Some more came from the NHANES in the 1970s (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) -- the data for the 2-18 year growth charts. Some of each group were breastfed, some were bottle-fed. Those formula fed ate a variety of different types of formula, including homemade ones. None of the children raised on formulas since 1980 have had their growth made into growth charts. Most of these children, both Fels and NHANES began solids at 2-3 weeks of age, and most were drinking regular cows' milk before a year, regardless of whether they started out breast or bottle.
