Jean,
Thanks for your take on the AWHONN videos. What I have done is to leave them
for my 2 ibclc coworkers to view (one is also a lamaze instructor) and if
they like the videos overall, then we will show them. i admitted to them,
and I'll admit to you, that I am very picky about bf articles and images,
etc. Maybe this is from years of mediawatching.
I'll try to remember the other parts of the videos that I found wanting. Let
me say there was alot of positive stuff too, esp. the first volume on
benefits of bf and the strong stand the docs took on bf support prenatally
and continuing bf.
I didn't like:
1. one doc said if the mother persisted wanting to bottle feed that she
would make a note to stop "harassing" her about bf. I can just hear most of
our nurses saying, "see these bf pushers do harass moms."
2. the video saying don't use nipple creams but showing alot of creams. here
I would have liked a big X over the images. I think people will remember the
images more than the words.
3. lots of images of bottle feeding altho artif. teats are discouraged.
again the images are powerful and I wish there were some of cup feeding or
other alternate fdg methods or kangaroo care. I don't think bottle feeding
needed to be shown at all.
4. I really didn't like the birth scenes. Having had 2 highly medicalized
births myself (i.e. typical USA hosp births), so never having experienced a
natural birth or homebirth or even seen a home birth, I would not say that I
am as picky about this....but it would have been nice to at least show ONE
mom not tied to her bed, on her back, etc. and being presented wtih a
tightly wrapped bundle of joy. also when they suctioned the baby, i winced.
You know I've been on lactnet a long time, and I've been enlightened. I
fully realize that the nsg staff are not where I am at, and that seeing
these videos will very likely be a step in the right direction FOR THEM, but
FOR ME, it seemed a backwards step.
Thanks for listening, and I do appreciate your insights.
