Above is a link to quite a good article on baby-led introduction to solids.
I read this article not long before my daughter was born, and it certainly
changed the way we introduced solids with her. We pretty much skipped mashed
and pureed food altogether, and just gave her soft foods to start with such
as steamed vegetables, and very ripe fruit. One of her favourite things to
have even at 7-8 months was a big piece of very ripe pear to hold and eat.
