I don't have any research or anything, just personal experience.  I offered
to nurse my ds right after his oral surgery to replace 8 teeth and his gums
were like raw hamburger  :-( afterwards.  He attempted but was in too much
pain. He finally nursed later that night about 6 hours. The dentist knew he
was still bfing and didn't mention anything about not allowing him. No
complications.
