I haven't posted in a long while. I accredited as an LLL leader in 1992, first certified IBCLC in 1997, and I have worked as the Breastfeeding Coordinator for our local WIC since March 2000. I am passionate about moms and babies being together and babies being nursed. I was excited at the prospect of a breastfeeding mom being in public service. I "heard" that she took her baby with her when she went back to work. This is what women did in the past. As they resume their duties, the baby went wherever mom went. I have been reading about postpartum care for the new mother through the ages and in different cultures. Some cultures have a 'lying in " period which sounds great to me. Our culture in the US seems to have lost that. I was an "older" mom, and I could no more have returned to work that early postpartum than turned aluminum into gold. I am in awe of this woman, who is not a spring chicken! I also want to say that I have learned alot in my role in
the WIC program. Many moms in our program are the first in generations to even CONSIDER breastfeeding. Their being accepted in their group (Maslow's Hierarchy)is threatened when they decide to try this radical, new-fangled infant-feeding idea, so I am so impressed at their strenghth when they nurse against their family tradition of bottle-feeding. My hope is that as women just go about their business, hopefully with the baby in tow where possible, people will be more accepting of breastfeeding in general. (Clearly some jobs are not compatible with this.) Just my two cents.
