We are a Patient and Family Centered Facility (PFCC). We have never had visiting hours any where in the hospital for 17 years. We are on the journey of PFCC, we listen to our patients and their families. Listening to the patient and their families is the safest care to give. And I might add, families are defined by the patients, be it the mailman, their hairdresser, best friend, etc. In our Family Birthplace we counsel the families to remember mom needs rest, after she nurses, quiet time for mom. We can put a note on the door for mom to remind staff she is trying to nap. We spend time teaching in our prenatal classes to have the family protect mom's rest time. Is it perfect? No, but, there is no way having a No visitors quiet time would guarantee moms would rest at that specified time. We need to educate staff to cluster their care, keep the birth certificate, photographer, financial people, etc out of the room when we know mom is resting. We need to focus on teaching families ways they can be help to her when she goes home in order for her to be successful at nursing and at resting.
