Hi Evereybody:
Alan Lucas has done some fabulous research on the impact of human milk on
intelligence and NEC in premature infants, and catch-up growth in SGA babies
(Acta Padediatr 1997; 86:564-569). He also does research on fortifiers and
formulae for such babies. His name is associated with a major infant formula
manufacturer.
In the paper "Randomized outcome trial of human milk fortification and
developmental outcome in preterm infants" (Am J Clin Nutr 1996; 64:142-151)
every infant in the study received human milk; half were fortified with one
thing, and the other half with another. No infant was exclusively fed pure,
unadulterated human milk. The benefits were ascribed to the type of
fortification.
Some of his comments at a conference I attended where he was speaking
indicated to me that he is not concerned with the WHO code, but solely with
infant growth and nutrition. Warmly, Nikki
