At our hospital, the baby goes to newborn nursery after c/s to be kept under
the warmer while mom being sutured and transferred to the recovery room.
Once she arrives there, if she is in good shape, we in lactation will take the
baby to recovery to do sts and usually have the first bf. This always makes
my day and the parents are gratified-- if the c/s was unexpected, they are
anxious that the bf will be affected and are reassured when the baby can
sts/bf right away. We in lactation basically bring the baby in and either get
the sts or bf started, then the dad or s.o. brings the baby back to nursery for
the bath and complete assessment (which has been delayed for the sts and bf)
when the mom is about ready to go to her pp room. Yes, we have to work
around cardiac monitor leads and wires and IVs and sometimes O2 tubing, but
the babies are awesome at finding the breast in a nearly prone position, as
mom is usually not sitting up in bed. My absolute favorite scenario was a
recent Irish mom with c/s twins. The twins were very large, 6 and 7 lbs
apiece, and were in the same warmer, as is our practice with twins. They
were sucking on each other's hands, and when they went to mom in the RR, all
I had to do was place them on mom and they both immediately latched. All
she could do was place her hand over their little butts, and dad was there, of
course. L&D nurses were peeking in, saying they had never seen that in years
of nursing. Certainly nothing that I did, other than take them to mom.
