New York State had a whole kindergarten-senior high school curriculum on
breastfeeding which was to be integrated into each year. It's gotta be at least
5-10 years old now. As far as I know it is not in use and never really was.
I have spoken a few times in middle schools and high schools, but there has
been no interest lately. I was also asked NOT to speak at my daughter's
school on career day, when I told the school I would not be speaking as a physical
therapist anymore, but as a lactation consultant ( I spoke about PT when my
son was in kindergarten there and for a few years after that). When I
wouldn't change my mind, they refused to schedule me. I have to admit, I gave up. I
have to pick my battles, and ration my energy. Thanks for sharing about your
experience, Micky. You mentioned being able to speak as one black woman to
another - I think the racial part of this teaching/sharing/educating is part of
the issue. I am a white woman whose child is a racial minority in her
schools, and was made to feel I didn't/couldn't understand other people's lives on
more than one occasion, whether it was about breastfeeding or child
discipline...perhaps because breastfeeding is viewed as a "lifestyle choice", at this
school my input was found suspect and unwanted. Sad, actually since in all
other areas the parents seemed to work so well together. It was actually the
administrator in the principal's office who had me silenced. The parents never
even got a choice. But like I said, it was a battle I guess I forfeited.

Peace,
Judy
