Valerie and other Doc's out there--
My son was delivered by my family practice doctor because I saw no need to go
to a specialist for a baby, when they would know nothing about my past
medical history. My doctor would also be able to be my son's doctor. He was
very supportive of breastfeeding, having experience with four of his own, and
asked me questions if he didn't understand or wanted more information. My
current Dr. agrees with breastfeeding, but what I wish more of then know
about was the benefits after 6 mo. They seem to agree it is the best, but
after 6 mo or 1 yr, they don't understand why to continue nursing. This is
probably the topic of conversation I have most often with my Dr. and friends
who nurse. The best compliment I got last week was from a friend nursing her
11 mo. She sprained her back, her doc couldn't see her and doc on call gave
her a drug not compatible with nursing. She said she wanted something else,
doc said she could wean, baby wasn't getting anything from nursing anyway.
My friend said "That is your opinion, not mine." She called LC and got
correct info about nursing and Rx. She told me later she wouldn't have know
this if we hadn't talked about it. Sometimes the simplist conversations
yield the best results.
