<As I read the press release, you were looking at outcomes in
children born between 1957 and 1965 (the 1979 cohort),
and their children, whose birthdates had to fall somewhere between 1968-1982 (if 14 and 4year olds in the 1986 cohort)
or at latest 2006 (if there were 4 year olds in the 2010 cohort.)>

I've now read the paper, so can correct this. It did *not* look at the outcomes in the 1979 cohort, but at outcomes in the children of the female members of the cohort who were in the appropriate age groups.

The birthdates actually had to fall after 1978, because data on breastfeeding status was only available after that year (I'm assuming because questions about breastfeeding didn't get added to the yearly surveys until then?). I guess that also answers your question about mode of feeding of the mothers in their infancy; no, it doesn't look as though they had that data. Children born after 1978 were included if a) they were aged between 4 and 14 at at least one point during the 14 years of the study, and b) they were singleton births (i.e., not twins or other multiples).

Hope that helps.

Best wishes,

Dr Sarah Vaughan
