Hi Everybody:
In the journal PEDIATRICS 1994; 93:254-260 in an article entitled "Prenatal
Marijuana Exposure and Neonatal Outcomes in Jamaica:An Ethnographic Study"
written by Dreber, Nugent and Hudgins, the authors conclude that the "absence
of any differences betwen the exposed or nonexposed groups in the early
neonatal period suggest that the better scores of the exposed neonates at 1
month are traceable to the cultural positioning and social and economic
characteristics of mothers using marijuana that select for the use of
marijuana but also promote neonatal development." This study is rare in that
the only drug used was marijuana; in most other studies, mothers are using a
variety of substances which make it different to sort out what effect derives
from what substance. Breastfeeding, as always needs to be suppported and
encouraged; marijuana use doesn't mean poor mothering....what helps mothers
the most is social support for their mothering activities. Warmly, Nikki
