    I have very similar stories.  Most of my moms  have that moment where 
baby is too eager to eat, and the shield falls off, baby  latches and gets the 
whole breast idea--and they are off to this wonderful  skin-to-skin start!  I 
also had another incident where the mom could not  handle getting rid of the 
shield.  She nursed for eight months and never  got rid of it.  However, the baby 
gained weight at every ped visit, and  never had issues with weight gain.
 
    To me, cutting the shield creates nipple abrasion,  and could potentially 
cut the baby's mouth.  I personally never recommend  it or condone it.
