We have both options at our facility and I have opted not to use the
sanitizer because the smell is so strong, it has alcohol, and if I
happen to get a finger in a baby's mouth it would taste horrid. It is
our policy that you must wash your hands with soap and water if there is
contamination from body fluids, like a diaper change, breast milk, baby
spit up. Would they have you use the sanitizer in that circumstance?
Good luck with your Clinic!!

I am working to establish an outpatient lactation clinic at our large
rural
clinic. An old supply closet is being converted for the purpose. When
I
told facilities maintenece I needed a sink to wash my hands, I was told
I
could use hand sanitizer instead.
I understand that hand sanitizer is very effective at preventing
infection.
I have had the experience that babies do not like the smell of the
stuff. I
am concerned about creating an aversive reaction at the breast if my
hands
are near the baby and smell of the stuff.
Any experience or advice from others on this issue?
