I, too, have a couple peds who tell moms that after the LC finishes,
they'll tell her "how it really is". The usual point of
disagreement is whether to cut baby off to get to the second side or
a "time limit" on a feed. One way I've found around this is as
follows:
"Some people may tell you that baby only needs to nurse a certain
amount of time. I have found that it takes an AVERAGE of 10-20
minutes of ACTIVE SUCKING to "finish" a side. However, since babies
rarely nurse full force without any pauses. Therefore you might
take one of two approaches. You could hold a stopwatch and keep
clicking it on and off for "sucking" and "not sucking" until you
reach 20 minutes. OR you could just watch the baby and let him/her
tell you when he's done." Most moms chuckle and say "I guess it's
easier to watch the baby." I don't know what I'd say if a mom ever
took me up on the stopwatch idea!
