I guess I need to elaborate a bit on this guy. When I went in for my 6 week
check, he didn't remember me. He said, "it looks like you've had that baby,
is that right?" He delivered my baby. I'd talked to him before about my
vocation as an RN/IBCLC and the fact that I teach breastfeeding classes. I
also told him that I have 3 beautiful triplets in addition to my new little
son who were breastfed for 13, 15, and 16 months. He doesn't remember
things from one visit to the next. I continue to remind him. He's not old
or senile, he's just a very bing, bang, boom, next patient kind of doctor.
I appreciate the reminder of the AACOG position on breastfeeding. I believe
I will write a letter as a mother and a consumer. I don't know if it will
make any more of an impression than my gently telling him in delivery that
I'd like to put my baby to breast rather than have him go the nursery, or
that I planned to breastfeed my new son as long as he was interested. He
didn't even remember that he'd delivered my baby. I've already spread the
word in the mom's group I belong to about making a different choice if
choosing an OB. I'll just give it another go with a letter. Thanks for all
of the advice and messages thus far!
