Dear Lactnet Friends:

Another way to ask a mother about how she feels is to ask, "Could you go to
sleep while you are nursing?" She can't go to sleep if she's in pain.

There is a quote from a mother that is helpful. I have put it on a teaching
slide with 2 breastfeeding photographs: one of a mother dressed in a
motorcycle suit, including a helmet, nursing her toddler and seated on a
motorcycle. The other is of a baby about 5 months old, lying naked on naked
mom who is reclining in a bathtub. The quote is: "They tell you that
there's 'a way' of doing it, when in fact what you want to know is that
there's loads of different ways of doing it."

There are really only 2 maxims for breastfeeding: 1) the mother is
comfortable. 2) the baby gets milk.
