New Higher Scholarship Funding Available for
Two Days of Hands-on Astronomy and Earth-science Education
Workshops for 4th -12th Grade Teachers and ISE Professionals
near San Francisco, Sept. 12 - 13, 2009

Thanks to generous supporters of astronomy education,
the Astronomical Society of the Pacific is pleased to
announce that scholarships to cover expenses up to $750
are now available for educators who want to attend a
weekend of hands-on workshops and exciting science
talks offered as part of the 120th anniversary meeting
of the non-profit Society at the Westin Hotel near the
San Francisco Airport in Millbrae, California.

The program will include space science and earth science
workshops for teachers in grades 4 through 12, as well as
sessions for educators who work in informal settings (such
as museums, nature centers, amateur astronomy clubs, and
community organizations.)

Workshops include:

* Galileo Teacher Training (learn basic hands-on activities,
help students do some of the work Galileo did, explore light
pollution in your community, receive a free Galileo Telescope
for your classroom).
* The Moon (learn about basic aspects of our satellite,
and some of the new missions that are exploring the Moon).
* NASA and Our Place in the Universe (practice modeling
and other activities that showcase the work of the Hubble,
the Kepler and other NASA telescopes in space).

Several other choices are also available, for both formal and
informal educators (covering earth and space science topics
and teaching techniques); see the web site below for details.

No background in astronomy will be assumed or required.
Experienced educators from the Society's staff, from NASA
and NSF-sponsored projects, and from educational
institutions around the country will be presenting. Only a
limited number of spaces are available, and, thanks to
conference supporters, registration for each day of the workshop
will be only $39.95.

Sunday afternoon will feature a special non-technical lecture
series about the search for life among the stars, with some of
the leading scientists from the SETI Institute describing the
scientific experiments now under way to identify life
beyond Earth.

Academic credit for teachers who attend the workshop and write a
paper will be available at an additional fee through San Francisco
State University (pending approval).

For more information, please go to the meeting web site at:
http://www.astrosociety.org/events/meeting.html
or go directly to the workshops page at:
http://www.astrosociety.org/events/2009mtg/workshops.html
New information and program details will be posted as available.
