We've had an outdoor sundial painted on asphalt in the middle of our parking cul-du-sac for 30 years.  It works! So far no accidents between pedestrians and autos, but it is an attractive "nuisance."  Recently, our outdoor group did a speed of sound and light exhibit, over about 150 yards and that's pretty good, though not necessarily an outdoor specific exhibit.
