COTTER AWARD RECIPIENT FOR 2001

The Society for Historical Archaeology and the SHA Awards Committee is
pleased to announce that the second recipient of the JOHN L. COTTER
AWARD IN HISRTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGY has been selected. The Committee would
like to thank all those who submitted nomination files, which were of
superlative quality, and others who participated in the nomination cycle.

The recipient for 2001 is:

                                 AUDREY HORNING.

Audrey Horning is being recognized for her innovative and broadly based
research on the Middle Atlantic region. At the start of her career she
has offered insightful interpretations on the 17th century settlement
at Jamestown (see "Journey to Jamestown", 1998 ARCHAEOLOGY MAGAZINE, Vol.
51, No. 2 for a summary) and, at the other chornological end, the
20th century archaeology of Appalachia (see 2000 "Shenandoah's Secret
History", ARCHAEOLOGY MAGAZINE, Vol. 53, No. 1 for a summary).

Horning is currently in Northern Ireland where she is doing
comparative research between Ulster and the Chesapeake and attempting to
set up an educational program in historical archaeology.

On Thursday (January 11th) Susan Henry Renaud, SHA President, will
present the Cotter Award to Audrey Horning at the Reception in Long
Beach.

Please note that the Awards Ceremony for 2001 is extended across the
entire meeting schedule in Long Beach, with the Awards of Merit
presentation at the Reception on Wendesday, the Cotter presentation
on Thursday and the Harrington Medal and the Ruppe Award presentations
at the banquet on Friday.

Congratulations to Audrey Horning.
