This cellar discussion is like differences of local terms for animals.
Mountain lion, Puma, Tiger, El Tigre, etc. are all covered under a Latin
name. If a sailor ships out to Iowa, he might call the portal to his root
cellar a hatchway or the wall to his house a bulkhead or his toilet a "head."
If a soldier musters out of the Army to live on a farm in Iowa, he might call
the entrance to his cellar a cellar door, a wall a wall, and his toilet a
latrine. These terms are probably regional as well as individual. Ron May
