Hey Guys--My understanding is that early wire nails were used for building
wooden boxes and such. Wire nails for building purposes had to wait til the
Bessemer steel wire extrusion process was perfected--in the 1880's I believe.
I too have dug Civil War era sites without finding wire nails... Carl Steen
