Hi Anita,

For the UK, in 1999 the IFA conducted a survey called 'Profiling the
Profession'. The report is still online here -
http://www.britarch.ac.uk/training/profile.html

It estimated around 4500 full-time professional archaeologists in the UK.
As I recall, the exercise was repeated in 2003 - but I can't find the
report on the IFA website.

Of course, such processes open up lots of very interesting questions over
definitions, perhaps especially for students and amateur/avocational
archaeologists...
