Lots of rebar. I think the concrete sleepers are less prone to warping,
decay, and shifting than the wooden ties and they don't require the use
of creosote or arsenic to slow the effects of weathering, which is a
good thing.

Now the rail systems are shifting to some sort of concrete mix for ties.

Although I would think they would shatter, there must be something in
the mix that prevents breakage.
