Thought I'd chime in with another response. :) I have seen pits of similar
construction and proximity to residences in a variety of historic house
locations, the most recent being a 1932 rustic cottage in Pennsylvania.  In
this case, the cistern even appeared on the original house blueprints.  I'd
also wager that you likely have a below-ground cistern on your hands...
