I like this suggestion.  It fits with the finding of "Wilkes and Liberty"
items in the colonies dating to a few years earlier.  See my paper '"Wilkes

Carl Steen's posting on the sleeve button with a fox and inscribed
"Tallyho" may be related to the English politician Charles James Fox.  He
was a Whig who in 1775 made a speech in the House Commons against the
policy of the Crown towards the American colonies.  He was also a critic of
Lord North's policies toward the American colonies and thus probably would
have been popular with the colonists.  Charles Fox held various
governmental posts after the Tories lost power.  King George III disliked
him.  This information was taken from *The Encyclopedia Britannica, *11th
handyman's edition, volume X, pages 761-764.



            Amanda Foreman's book, *The Duchess* has some detailed
descriptions of the Duchess of Devonshire and the Duchess of Portland
working with Fox in his various election campaigns and the development of
Whig politics.  If I remember correctly, there was a passage of some of
Fox's supporters wearing the tails of foxes as part of their hats.
Unfortunately,
I have given away my copy of *The Duchess* so I cannot provide a good
reference to the passages.
