Here are a couple of books which are interesting:

- Haskell (Harry), The early music revival: a history, London: Thames and
Hudson, 1988

- Kenyon (Nicholas), Authenticity and early music, Oxford: Oxford University
Press, 1991

- Sherman (Bernard D.), Inside early music: conversations with performers,
New York: Oxford University Press, 1997 (a very interesting book with
conversations with leading performers of today, like Leonhardt, Gardiner,
Herreweghe, Norrington, Christie and others)

I would also recommend the essays Nikolaus Harnoncourt has written.
They have been mainly written in the 60s and 70s, but are still very
stimulating and informative. They have been translated from German; I
have the original versions and don't know where the English translations
have been published.
